                    Syech Jusuf Festival
                  MAKASSAR
                    - A 80-strong art mission from Indonesia's South Sulawesi
province left for Cape Town, South Africa, on Sunday to take
part in Syech Jusuf festival, seminar and trade expo scheduled
                    for March 23-29.
The art mission's participation in the event had historical
and political meaning as Syech Jusuf who was grand ulama and
fighter from Gowa district, South Sulawesi, was well known
as a staunch advocate of nationalism in South Africa, South
Sulawesi Governor HM. Amin Syam said when seeing off the mission.
Even the current Cape Town governor is one of the descendants
of Syech Jusuf who was exiled by the Dutch colonial ruler
to South Africa a few centuries ago, Syam said.
In South Africa Syech Africa propagated Islam and worked together
with local people to fight against the colonial ruler, he
                    said. * ant
