                    tourism development underway in national park 
                  GONDAR 
                    - Tourism development activities aimed at preserving the Ecology 
                    of Semien Mountains National Park was being carried out with 
                    an outlay of over four million birr obtained from the Austrian 
                    government. 
                     
                    Integrated development project manager with the park, Teshome 
                    Mulu said that park conservation and development activities 
                    are being undertaken with the participation of the public 
                    this year. Plantation of various tree seedlings as well as 
                    soil and water conservation activities on 800 hectares of 
                    land would be carried out in the park in a bid to maintain 
                    the ecology of the park, he said. 
                     
                    The Manager said there is a plan to carry out modern crop 
                    and horticultural development by harnessing four rivers with 
                    a view to making the farmers in the park area food self-sufficient. 
                    The Manager said the farmers would be embraced under animal 
                    husbandry program, adding that some 500 sheep and goat would 
                    be distributed among farmers in loan. 
                    Moreover, he said, the project would undertake the construction 
                    of veterinary clinic and development of three springs would 
                    be carried out. 
                    The Semien Mountains National Park covers 200 sq. kilometer
