                | NTB tourism’s
                    glorious moment should be returned

                    Senggigi
                    - The secretary of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) province,
Nanang Samodra, considered that indeed the glorious era of
NTB tourism has passed; however, he added, all elements in
the region should make great efforts to bring it back. “The
golden moment of NTB tourism could be felt in 1997 until a
riot occurred in 2000. To return it the acts of all elements
are needed,” he said in a gathering of tourism players
attended also by NTB’s legislature’s members recently
here. All available components should cooperate well as only
by that way the tourism sector that has been initiated since
                    1980s can be robust again.

“According to my personal judgment, there is no togetherness
in NTB tourism. We work partially and busy with our own arguments,”
                    he commented.
Further he said that despite his long absence in NTB tourism,
he expected that the joining of NTB’s ASITA (Association
of Indonesian Travel Agents’) chair, Misbach Mulyadi,
as a member of NTB’s legislature for the period 2004-2009,
would bring improvement to the gloomy NTB tourism.
The secretary during the occasion also hoped that mass media
to support the attempts to recover NTB tourism.

He said that the government and tourism stakeholders had conducted
promotional efforts within and outside the Indonesia, but
bad covering of media to small crimes had tarnished those
                    attempts.

“We expect media to give balanced information for example
a covering on a crime should also be followed by the news
on how the police handle it. Hence guests will feel secure
                    to visit NTB.”
In the other he expected that a small crime should not take
a bigger portion in news that the many good things in NTB.

The secretary’s view was similar to the view of Drs
Tjok Suthendra, the head of West Lombok’s Tourism, Cultural,
and Art Authority that he commented indeed the commitment
of all elements in NTB was badly in need to promote NTB tourism.

The elements comprise government/legislature, tourism players,
and the society. Those three elements should own a strong
commitment to develop the region’s tourism.
“The current tourism we develop now is people based
tourism. It means that tourism directly benefits people and
they keep it,” he said. *pry/ant
